Storage buildings can protect inventory from weather while still exposing it to humidity, condensation, particles and unnoticed leaks. The right monitoring plan depends on what is stored, how sensitive it is and how the building is operated.
Humidity is often the first useful metric
High relative humidity can support mold on cardboard, wood, textiles and dust. It can also contribute to corrosion and packaging failure. Low temperature surfaces can reach dew point even when the room-average humidity appears moderate, especially near exterior walls, slab edges, ducts or metal components.
Temperature stability matters
Large swings change relative humidity and can create condensation on dense materials. Track temperature and humidity together. For sensitive inventory, evaluate dew point and product-specific storage requirements rather than relying on a generic comfort range.
Water entry can remain hidden
Roof seams, penetrations, gutters, overhead doors, plumbing and condensate systems can introduce water behind racks or above ceilings. Inspect after heavy rain and compare sensor spikes with weather. A recurring local humidity event can provide an early clue before visible damage reaches inventory.
Particles and housekeeping
Forklifts, loading doors, vehicle exhaust, process dust and outdoor air can raise particle levels. Source control, housekeeping, filtration and pressure relationships should be considered together. A particle monitor can identify timing, but it cannot identify every particle type.
Place sensors where they can answer questions
- Use multiple heights or zones where stratification is possible.
- Include known cold corners, roof-leak history and representative inventory areas.
- Avoid placing every sensor directly beside a supply register or exterior door.
- Keep a reference sensor in a known stable location.
- Document sensor moves, calibration checks and battery failures.
Set action levels around the inventory
Pharmaceuticals, electronics, paper goods, wood products and food each have different requirements. Follow product, insurer and regulatory requirements where applicable. General indoor-air guidance should not replace industry-specific storage standards.
Respond to trends before damage appears
A monitoring program should define who receives alerts, how quickly the area will be inspected and what temporary measures are appropriate. Data without an action plan can document a loss without preventing it.
