A portable air cleaner can reduce airborne particles in the room where it operates. It cannot repair a leak, dry a wall cavity, remove contaminated drywall or replace ventilation. The right purchase begins by identifying what you want the device to do.
Start with room size and clean-air delivery
Look for a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) appropriate for the room. CADR reflects how quickly a purifier delivers filtered air for common particle categories. A larger room or a need for more air changes requires greater airflow. Manufacturer “maximum room size” claims may be based on very low air-change assumptions, so compare the actual CADR rather than relying only on marketing square footage.
Use true particle filtration
A well-sealed HEPA filter is a strong choice for fine particles such as pollen, dust and many airborne fungal particles. Performance depends on the whole machine: filter quality, cabinet sealing, airflow and fan speed. A premium filter in a leaky housing may underperform.
Understand what carbon can and cannot do
Activated carbon can reduce some odors and gases, but thin carbon sheets saturate quickly and are not equivalent to a deep bed of adsorbent media. If odor or volatile organic compounds are the main concern, ask how much carbon the unit actually contains and what replacement cost will be.
Avoid ozone-producing devices
Ozone is a lung irritant. Avoid devices marketed primarily as ozone generators, and be cautious with ionization or “active” technologies unless independent testing demonstrates safe emissions and a clear benefit. Mechanical filtration is easier to understand and verify.
Noise determines whether the unit will be used
A purifier that delivers excellent airflow only at a setting too loud for sleeping will spend most of its life on a lower, less effective speed. Compare sound levels and CADR at the fan setting you can realistically tolerate.
Plan for maintenance
- Check replacement-filter price and availability.
- Confirm whether the prefilter can be vacuumed or washed.
- Do not run a loaded filter far beyond its useful life.
- Place the unit where air can enter and leave freely.
- Keep the surrounding floor and furniture clean so settled dust is not continually reintroduced.
Use filtration as part of source control
If the property has active mold growth, water damage, smoke, combustion problems or a strong chemical source, the priority is to correct or remove the source. A purifier may reduce airborne particles during the process, but it should not be used to make an unresolved building problem appear acceptable.
